Chapter Twenty

It was the middle of the quiet shift when Ferne started shouting out in pain. Bryce had been deeply asleep, dreaming of Ithiya. He’d been a child again, in the mountains near his home, snow-gliding with his younger brothers and sisters. Except, in the dream, he’d fallen face first into a snow drift, and when he’d managed to extricate himself, his siblings were nowhere to be seen. His parents had disappeared, too. He’d called out, shouting their names, but only his own voice had replied, echoing back at him from the dark trees.

Ferne’s yells blended with his own shouts in his mind as he wakened, the external noise dragging him up from the depths of his subconscious. He opened his eyes in darkness, the threads of his dream still clinging to his thoughts.

Disoriented, he lay still. Where was he? What was that—

Ferne!

He threw back his covers and leapt out of bed.

“Light! Door, open!”

The room burst into illumination.

Bryce ran for the door, reaching it before it fully opened. He turned sideways to slip through the gap.

Meanwhile, Oriana had also started hollering. “Ferne, what’s wrong? Somebody help! Please help Ferne!”

As Bryce raced across the living area of the suite, Nahla’s door opened. The little girl stood in the doorway, clutching an item of clothing to her chest, her long, dark brown hair a messy halo.

“What’s…?” she asked, but Bryce didn’t hear the rest.

He’d reached the twins’ bedroom seconds after he awoke.

Ferne was sitting up in bed, holding his head, still yelling. Oriana leaned over him, her arm across his shoulders.

When Bryce appeared she looked up. Her eyes were shiny and her chin trembled. “Please help him, Bryce. I don’t know what’s wrong.”

“Yeah, of course. I’ll comm for a medic.” He sent out the request, and then sat on the other side of Ferne from Oriana.

The boy was hunched over as if in great pain. Bryce had never seen anything like it. Was Ferne suffering from a brain disease? Surely it would be impossible to catch a disease on the ship. Or had something happened to Ferne on the Regian planet, and they were only seeing the effects now?

Bryce also held the boy and waited tensely for the medic to arrive.

Suddenly, Ferne’s hands fell to his sides and he flopped backward onto his pillows. He was pale and sweat shone on his upper lip and forehead. He exhaled, letting out a moan of relief. “Ugh, that was terrible!”

“Is it over?” Oriana asked. “Are you feeling better? What was wrong with you?”

Ferne massaged his temples. “Yes, I think it’s over. I think he finally shut up.”

“Huh?” asked Oriana. “What are you talking about?”

Nahla walked into the bedroom, still holding onto the piece of clothing. “Is Ferne sick?”

“No, I’m not sick,” he replied, though his tone remained strained.

The external door chime sounded, and Bryce told it to open. A Black Dog medic ran in, a bag of equipment in his hand. He came straight into the bedroom, paused, and looked around before focusing on Ferne.
